Love Potion #4: Corsages for the Generations

I know it's been an awfully long time, but you may remember that I whipped up some fabric corsages for Mr. Potion's mom, my mom, and my grandmothers.  While I had Mr. Potion's Best Woman deliver FMIL Potion's corsage to her, I was able to take a moment with the important women in my family and present them with these special little accessories.

First was my dad's mom, Mammaw:

Next, my mom's mom, Grandma Bootsie:

Next, my mom's stepmom, Grandma:

And finally, my mom!

Aaaaaaaaaand then we all got slightly emotional and had to touch up our make-up.  Again :)

What kind of flowers did you have the important women in your life wear?

Love Potion #3: Last Minute Details

When we were considering our list of must-have photos to discuss with our photographer, I went back and forth over whether or not to have her capture the actual putting-on of the dress.  I know the internet is full of gorgeous photos of brides emerging from layers of tulle, glancing over bare shoulders, allowing someone to lace up their corsets.  Those definitely make for some beautiful photos but in the end, I decided my dress doesn't lend itself to those types of photos- mainly because it doesn't have closures in the back.  Getting into my dress was not glamorous- we kicked everyone out of the room and my mom helped me step into the gown, pull the petticoat on underneath, zip up the side zipper, and button up the front.  I wouldn't have been comfortable with anyone else watching me hustle around in my underwear, and fastening up buttons in the front of a gown is just not as photo-worthy as if they were in the back.  So no, there are no pictures of me putting on my wedding dress- but trust me, there are plenty of me in the dress!

Once I was dressed, I put some last-minute touches on my make-up...

...and so did the bridesmaids

my sister/MOH
another Tiny Attendant, A, patiently letting her mom do her hair
Then it was time for the rest of the bridal bits and pieces:

the diamond pendant necklace was Mr. Potion's gift to me, delivered by his Best Woman earlier that morning
nervously inspecting my make-up one more time
my mom helped me with my engagement ring
my sister helped me with my college ring
then I put in my earrings
then it was time for my beautiful new necklace
my mom really enjoyed putting the flowers in my hair!
You may not have noticed them, but something else was in my hair, too- previously worn by Mrs. Cauldron, Mrs. Unicorn, Mrs. Wizard, Mrs. Elk, Mrs. Castle, Mrs. Petit Four, Mrs. Sunhat, Mrs. Funnel Cake, Mrs. Cannon, Mrs. Bacon, Mrs. Biscuit, and Mrs. Jaguar, and since worn by Mrs. Armadillo, Mrs. Mongoose, Mrs. Panda, Mrs. Campfire, and most recently, Mrs. Road Trip!

I see a little bee!
Next, I needed to put on my shoes, and my sister MOH wanted to help (all the while making jokes about my tiny feet):

Finally, the only thing I had left to put on was my veil!

All that was left was to grab our bouquets and not-so-patiently wait for the procession music to start!

another Tiny Attendant, Mr. Potion's nephew J, loved the book he got to carry in lieu of a ring pillow
shoes!
my sisters gave me a last-second pep talk
Did you have photos taken while you put on your dress, or just the before and after?  What sort of jewelry and accessories did you wear on your big day?  Did you DIY your make-up or hire a MUA?

Love Potion #2: Gettin' Our Hairs Did

The morning of our wedding, I woke up pretty dang early (for a Saturday), slipped into some jeans and a hoodie, put my contacts in, and sat down at the computer to write this post (which unfortunately didn't go live on the 'Bee until a couple of days later).  I shuffled into the kitchen where my mom handed me a mug of coffee, gave me a hug, and asked how I was feeling.  I'm honestly not sure how I answered that question, but I know the stress of a couple of days before was gone and I was oh-so-ready to become Mrs. Potion.

My sisters and the other bridesmaids started to wake up and trickle into the kitchen to dig in to some of the amazing breakfast goodies my parents had laid out.

My dad grabbed some, too
The hair dresser showed up a little while later to start beautifying us, but unfortunately her assistant was unable to join her like we'd expected, so some girls decided they'd rather do their own hair to ensure that everyone was ready to go on time.  Can I just say that we all look pretty fantastic without make up in the morning? ;)

the epic braid starts...
Next up was Best Woman L
then BM BabySis gets a Katniss braid...
then one of our Tiny Attendants, M E, begins her princess transformation
After we finished our hair and make up, the girls got into their dresses, we loaded the cars with everything we needed (or so we thought...), and we zipped around the corner to the church to meet the photographer and finish getting ready.

Did you go to a salon to have your hair done the morning of your wedding, or did the salon come to you?

Love Potion #1: Dress Rehearsal

Even though our wedding was not, in fact, a dance recital, and even though we would not be rehearsing in our "costumes", I kept referring to the rehearsal festivities as "dress rehearsal".

back stage before an actual dress rehearsal with my dear friend L // personal photo
We did run through the ceremony pretty thoroughly, however, costumes or no.  Everyone involved in our wedding truly showed themselves as amazingly patient because it was quite a long rehearsal- but as not everyone had experienced a Catholic Mass before, much less a Catholic wedding, I wanted to make sure everyone was comfortable with the flow of events.  I wanted our lectors to have a chance to practice their readings in full so they would be comfortable the next day, I wanted our ushers to have a chance to practice organizing the Communion line (since we were only doing one main line down the middle instead of two), and, of course, I wanted our bridal party to practice entering and exiting the church.  Everything went off without a hitch during the ceremony, so I think the practice was worth it...but, needless to say, everyone was very excited when it was time to pop over to the buffet in the social hall for dinner.

Of course, since we were so focused on the actual rehearsal, eating the delicious dinner, and distributing gifts to everyone involved in the ceremony, neither Mr. Potion nor I actually took any pictures.  (I'm a very bad blogger.)  You'll just have to use your imagination to picture what everything looked like, but I do have this photo of us with my cousin L, who read the Prayers of the Faithful during our ceremony.

Oh and one more visual- remember the 50s housewife-themed bridal shower MOH LilSis put on for me?

All of the guests were given decorated wooden spoons as party favors and there were a few left over, so I carried them as a bouquet during the rehearsal.  And, like I said, I don't have any pictures of this so...use your imagination?

Literally everyone who came to our wedding was from out-of-town (aside from my parents and sisters), so pretty much everyone congregated at my parents' house for an Out-of-Town Guests Reception, as it were, while everyone involved in the wedding rehearsed and ate at the church.  Afterwards, we popped in to say hello and enjoy some of the refreshments...

The night wasn't over yet, though!  Our bridal party, bless their hearts, went with Mr. Potion and I down to the reception site to set up for the next day.  We didn't have much to set up- the candy buffet, a few signs for the bar and cupcakes, the bathroom baskets, and only a couple of centerpieces.  However, Spring House is a restaurant, and though they technically closed well before midnight, we had to wait for the last table to leave before we could begin so...yeah, we didn't get started until midnight.  But having such a big team meant we worked quickly, so everyone was still able to get a decent amount of sleep that night...I hope!  (You don't get to see the fruits of our labor until we get to the reception posts...be patient!)  Of course, while we put our bridal party to work, everybody else got to relax, visit, and enjoy the beginning of a weekend-long party.

Was your wedding rehearsal a quick run-through or a more thorough practice?  Was your rehearsal dinner a formal affair or more laid-back?  Did you manage to take actual photos at your rehearsal and rehearsal dinner or did you slack like me?

Love Potion #0.5: Uh...Who is This Chick?

Um...hi.  Remember me?

I first introduced myself to y'all back in May 2012 and asked you to join Mr. Potion and I on our wedding planning journey.  From the very beginning, I made it pretty clear that we're absolute geeks.  Did you read along as we got ready for our November 2012 wedding in Middle-of-Nowhere, Alabama?  Did you wonder if I would ever finish some of the hand-made details in our fall color palette?  Did you correctly guess which vintage dress I would choose?  Did you correctly guess which dress my bridesmaids would choose?

Any of this sound familiar?

Well, I'm finally back to the 'Bee to share recaps from our beautiful big day. It's been an embarrassingly long time since we first got our photos, and longer still since we actually tied the knot- almost a year!  I really am sorry for the delay and I could offer excuses about how busy we've been setting up this new life together and figuring out this thing called marriage, but I'm going to be honest with you- Gryffindor or no, the thing that's kept me from sharing my recaps for this long has been fear.  Yup, I'm a big fat chicken.  Our wedding day was beautiful and perfect and everything we wanted it to be- the food was delicious, the guests had a blast, and most importantly- we got married.  But if I were to put pictures of that beautiful, perfect day on the internet and write about what happened, then other people would be able to see and comment on it.  And what if those other people don't find the pictures quite so beautiful?

I've been holding back my recaps because I've been afraid that people would read them, not like them, share their dislike, and that I would let that dislike color my memories of our day.  In short, I've been selfish- if I don't show you pictures of my hair, you can't tell me you don't like it and I can continue feeling like I looked beautiful that day.  But Mr. Potion has finally convinced me that sharing wedding recaps is more for us than for you anyway- it's a way to permanently document all of the details, so that one day, if I want to remember that funny story or what was going through my head as we said our vows, I can read it and relive it all over again.

So here goes, Hive- I'm overcoming a bit of busyness, a pinch of laziness, and a heaping scoop of cowardice to bring you a recap of our wedding day.  If you enjoyed our planning journey, I hope you'll enjoy seeing the results.

Here goes nothin'!
